Literature Text

When the world was young and dreary
And the days of Britain few,
He was wise, but old and weary;
Many things this wizard knew.

From a demon he descended,
Arcane powers in his veins.
He was cosmic, stellar, splendid,
Walking high across the planes.

As a sage, his names were many,
Shape was shifting, form did turn.
'Merlin' was as good as any.
That's the name that we now learn.

Casting spells and weaving magic,
Building Stonehenge all alone.
Yet unknown to him his tragic
Fate, as foundling of his own.

He saw the future and the past,
But could not see his end.
And yet, he saw a kingdom vast.
To Uther's court he went.

The Pendragon, with armies great,
Did conquer many lands.
And finally he met his fate
In Merlin's mighty hands.

He marched to Cornwall, to the fray,
Gorlois, his foe, was waiting.
The wizard, in his robes of grey,
Was plotting and was baiting.

His rival's wife the dragon saw,
Igraine was fair and fine.
And Uther watched and said in awe:
"I wish that she was mine."

The wizard had a vision bright
And Merlin thought and pondered.
He dreamed of deeds in highest light,
Of Uther's son, and wondered.

He crafted him a sly disguise
And Uther's form was changed.
With trickery and magic lies,
A meeting was arranged.

Gorlois, he fell and Uther stood;
Was laying with Igraine.
A son was born, for Britain's good,
But lastly just in vain.

And Merlin walked on starry ways,
Advised the king with cunning.
And even now his legend stays,
Of magic grand and stunning!
This is the first part of my revised poetry-series about Arthurian Legend, one of my favourite topics.

I won't label them as parts, because it's more a loosely connected series of works, rather than a full fledged story, but I will post them in the correct order.

I have no real definitive inspiration for this, like "Le Morte D'Arthur", "The Once and Future King" or "Idylls of the King." Instead I will blend different version of the legend, while also incorporating some side-stories like "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight."

Meanwhile I'm trying to improve my poetry as a whole by attempting to use a correct meter for all of them.
